What Is a Tautliner Curtain?
A tautliner is a curtain-side body that lets you load from the side. Here is how the curtain itself is built and why it fails.
A curtain instead of a wall
A tautliner (curtain-side) trailer replaces rigid side walls with a tensioned PVC curtain running on rollers along a top rail. It allows forklift loading from the side of the vehicle rather than only from the rear.
The curtain is a structural item, not just a cover. It carries tension, resists wind load at highway speed and in many configurations contributes to load restraint.
How a curtain is constructed
A typical curtain uses heavy PVC-coated polyester, welded seams, a reinforced top hem with roller hooks, a bottom hem with buckles or a tensioning system, and vertical reinforcing straps at regular intervals.
Hardware — buckles, ratchets, eyelets, corner plates — takes as much abuse as the fabric, and is often what needs attention first.
Why curtains fail
Forklift tine strikes, overloading against the curtain, UV degradation, failed stitching or welds, and torn eyelets are the common causes. Most of these are repairable if they are dealt with before the tear runs.
