Every strap is labelled with a lashing capacity (LC) and a standard hand force. The rated capacity of the assembly is limited by its weakest component — webbing, ratchet or end fitting.
Never assume the breaking strength is the working figure; specify by LC for the load you actually carry.
Angles and friction do the work
A top-over lashing relies on downward force increasing friction between the load and the deck. Shallow angles waste tension. Anti-slip matting can dramatically reduce the number of straps required.
Inspect and retire
Cuts, chemical burns, abrasion at edges and deformed hooks are all grounds for retirement. Corner protectors extend webbing life significantly on steel and timber loads.
