PVC-coated polyester dominates commercial transport for good reason. Here is how the alternatives compare.
PVC-coated polyester
Fully waterproof, weldable (so seams can be sealed rather than stitched), strong in tear resistance and available in a wide weight range. It is the default for truck tarpaulins, tautliner curtains and tipper covers.
Canvas and polyethylene
Canvas breathes and suits some agricultural applications but absorbs water and adds weight. Woven polyethylene sheeting is inexpensive and useful for short-term protection, but it degrades quickly under Highveld UV and is not a commercial transport solution.

High UV, summer hail and large day-night temperature swings favour UV-stabilised PVC with welded seams and reinforced stress points.
